But, arguably, the end of its life is the best time to play any console: you have a massive library of games to choose from and tens of millions of players worldwide to play with. PS4 is certainly no different. I remember a lot from Christmas 1996, the year when I got my Sega Saturn: my mum button-mashing her way to victory in Virtua Fighter 2, my granddad driving safely within the speed limit in Sega Rally. Then there was NiGHTS Into Dreams, Sonic Team's answer to Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot. And what an answer it was: flying through children's dreams as an androgynous purple jester, it was Sega at its most creative - and, perhaps, its most commercially suicidal.

There's friction between the original and this lavish remake, but this is a scintillating launch title that shows off the PS5's strengths. What a difference 11 years can make. When it launched way back in 2009, FromSoftware's Demon's Souls was something of a whispered secret. Passed over by Sony for western release and subsequently picked up by a handful of adventurous importers, it was followed by word of mouth that soon escalated, and the chorus has been ringing out loudly ever since.

In an age where arms manufacturers lobby publishers to include real-life killing machines in FPS games, there's something quite innocent, even sweet, about the idea of shooting a green plasma ball from a Big F***ing Gun.

Personally, I was pretty pleased with myself for getting to hard mode when I was playing Rock Band, but for some music game enthusiasts that simply isn't enough - they also need to defy the laws of physics.
