The Wonderful 101 remaster is welcome - but console performance disappoints

The Wonderful 101 is part of a last handful of Wii U exclusives to get a remaster, this month landing on Switch, PS4 and PC thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign from creator Platinum Games. It's game that presents many challenges in migrating away from home turf. To begin with, it's famously built with second screen play in mind - not an easy fit for today's consoles. Secondly, The Wonderful 101 pushes the Platinum engine hard. [Read More]

Tunic still lacks a release date, but already has speedrunners interested

Tunic, the tiny fox adventure which recently gained a great demo on Steam and Xbox, still lacks a release date. Alas, despite having a long chat about game secrets with Tunic's creator Andrew "Dicey" Shouldice, I could not uncover the date we will all explore Tunic's world further. But there are promising signs Tunic - already some six years in the making - is finally coming soon, and interest in the game is growing. [Read More]

Video: Are the Far Cry games connected?

With the exception of a few characters from Far Cry 3 popping up in Far Cry 4's Kyrat, the general assumption is that each Far Cry game stands alone, lacking any significant narrative links. The thing is, I'm a massive Far Cry nerd and, after noticing numerous subtle details in Far Cry 4 that seemed to reference past games and characters, I decided to dig a bit deeper. After wading through the endless swamp of online speculation, I've got a pretty solid theory (I think) that not only ties the whole series together, but also points us toward a possible setting for Far Cry 5. Why PC is the best place to play Mass Effect Andromeda

We've lost count of the amount of PC comparisons we've done where the only tangible enhancements amount to arbitrary resolution support and higher frame-rates. Sure, higher quality effects - such as higher resolution shadows - also usually form part of the mix, but significant graphical improvements are few and far between. Mass Effect Andromeda is different: in common with several titles based on DICE's excellent Frostbite engine, the PC really is the natural home for this game. [Read More]

Black streamers and Color of Change demand #TwitchDoBetter

Black streamers on Twitch have joined forces with Color Of Change on a campaign demanding #TwitchDoBetter. Last year marginalised creators on the platform were rocked by a surge of malicious hate raids and the hashtag #TwitchDoBetter was used to criticise Twitch's response. This was followed by the #ADayOffTwitch campaign. However, this new campaign is asking for a resurgence in support. In an open letter to Twitch CEO Emmett Shear and senior staff, Black streamers state not enough has been done to support marginalised creators. [Read More]

Bungie CEO apologises after damning report exposes a culture of "overt sexism" at the studio

Bungie CEO Pete Parsons has apologised after a report alleged multiple instances of sexism and workplace toxicity at the studio. IGN's report into alleged issues with Bungie's narrative team detailed "overt sexism, boys' club culture, crunch, and HR protection of abusers as well as more complex stories of microaggressions, systemic inequalities, and difficulties in being heard". Though the studio "recognised [its] shortcomings" and publicly committed to making improvements back in September, the statement from Pete Parsons apologised to all staff who have " [Read More]

Minecraft's new cheese and spaghetti caves are seriously impressing fans

Minecraft maker Mojang has released a new Caves and Cliffs test live for PC, and fans are seriously impressed by the changes it makes. The 1.18 experimental snapshot allows for some truly spectacular world generation, including realistic-looking mountain peaks and Mines of Moria-like cave structures. The only thing which disappointed me was these "cheese", "spaghetti" and "noodle" caves were not actually places you could mine out Italian foodstuffs. (Those names simply reflect the holey or elongated shapes created by the snapshot's cave generation algorithm. [Read More]
