Returnal's Jane Perry on women in games and embodying psychological trauma

"There were some comments that came up on Twitter after the game was released saying ‘Oh, she's ugly, she's not very attractive, I'm not interested in her'," says Jane Perry, the voice of Returnal's lead character Selene. "And I thought that was such an interesting comment, I thought it was kind of illuminating in some ways in terms of what is expected of female characters in games, especially if they're going to be a kick-ass hero like Selene. Rust revamps farming system, adds horse poop

Time to really get serious about growing that hemp for... clothing, as Rust has introduced a new update, and it's all about farming. The rework focuses on giving players a more in-depth system for farming, in which "all conditions of a plant are now important" - with better conditions giving better rewards. For the best yields, you'll need to get the lighting, water saturation, ground condition and temperature of your plants right. [Read More]

The Last Campfire review - puzzles abound in an elegant story of hope

More sweet puzzley charm from the people behind LostWinds. I would love to know how The Last Campfire was made. Not the coding or the art, which I'll happily admit I would not understand even if I had a lifetime of education ahead of me. But the thinking behind the design. This is a puzzle game in which puzzles are everywhere - puzzles of different types, of different approaches, puzzles operating at different levels of the construction. [Read More]

Titanfall 2 is free to play this weekend on Steam

If you're the kind of person that lists big stompy robots, feisty FPS action, and parkour as three of their favourite things, then you've almost certainly already played Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends pre-cursor, Titanfall 2. But if you somehow haven't, then you can do that very thing for free this weekend on Steam. Titanfall 2 released back in 2016 to much acclaim (its commercial reception was less favourable, perhaps due to publisher EA famously dubious decision to wedge its release between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare), with ample praise piled on the first-person shooter's sterling blend of the aforementioned robots, guns, and zippy traversal. AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT review: ray-tracing performance

Previous page Page 6 of 7 Next page When ray tracing was first announced by Nvidia as the Next Big Thing in video game graphics, we were excited, but our excitement was tempered by the initial lack of available software. It's taken a couple of years for RT support to turn into something substantial and desirable - and now we have support in the next generation of consoles, we can likely assume that ray tracing will swiftly become a standard component of mainstream rendering. Apex Legends increasing level cap and player progression rewards next week

Respawn has detailed a bunch of changes being implemented to Apex Legend's levelling up system - including a level cap increase and more rewards for level progression. For starters, the level cap is being upped from 100 to 500, and there'll be more frequent Apex Packs as level rewards too. Players will receive one pack per level up to 20, one pack every two levels between 22 and 300, then one pack every five levels between 305 and 500. [Read More]

Call of Duty: Warzone can't seem to sort out its troublesome stim

Call of Duty: Warzone's stim has for some months now caused havoc in the battle royale - and it seems the developers of the game are struggling to get on top of it. The stim is a piece of equipment that restores health points to your character and refreshes super sprint. It's supposed to help players get out of tough situations, but it has also been used nefariously as part of a raft of troublesome glitches and exploits that just won't go away - despite multiple patches. CCP still isn't giving up on its EVE Online first-person shooter dreams

Despite having already cancelled one attempt at turning EVE Online into an FPS, developer CCP's enthusiasm for the project apparently remains strong: it's now confirmed that, two years after Project Nova officially got the chop, work on a new FPS continues at its London Studio. EVE Online FPS Project Nova was initially unveiled in 2016 as a spiritual successor to CCP's long-defunct free-to-play PS3 shooter Dust 514. Almost two years went by with ne'er a peep on the project, but then October 2018 finally brought a more extensive reveal. [Read More]

Face-Off: Mass Effect 3 Special Edition on Wii U

Over the last six years, developers have sought to find balance in their cross-platform development, weighing up the pluses and minuses of the PS3 and Xbox 360 and looking to strike a good balance between the two. Microsoft concentrates on a stronger graphics core while Sony has put its efforts into an advanced CPU, but on a general level most games these days work out pretty well overall on both machines. Godfall: Challenger Edition and Prison Architect are currently free on the Epic Store

Thursday is here, meaning a fresh batch of free games to download and keep courtesy of the Epic Games Store, which this week look an awful lot like Prison Architect and Godfall: Challenger Edition. And if that's somehow not enough to be getting on with, leaks are suggesting Epic will have plenty more freebies to give away over the festive period. First up though, this week's offerings, beginning with developer Counterplay Games' Godfall: Challenger Edition. [Read More]
