Meeting Andrzej Sapkowski, the writer who created The Witcher

Andrzej Sapkowski has something of a reputation. To start with, he's a big deal. He invented Geralt, witchers, Triss, Ciri, the whole thing - it all came out of his head. He has won awards and his work is revered, especially in Poland. More than once I've heard him described as the Polish Tolkien. But I've also heard he can be difficult - and I'm on my way to meet him. [Read More]

Nintendo 2DS review | Eurogamer.net

It's an indication of just how much the handheld gaming arena has changed in the past few years that Nintendo's shock announcement of the 2DS was greeted with such mirth and derision by the general public; once upon a time, the allure of new hardware from the Kyoto veteran would have been utterly irresistible to anyone who had experienced the joys of playing Tetris or Pokémon on their monochrome Game Boy, but these days Nintendo's dominance of the market it once ruled with an iron fist is under fire from all sides. Star Trek - Voyager: Elite Force

Elite? Two years ago, Elite Force was one of the finest first person shooters to grace our PC screens since Half-Life. Two years ago, the Quake III engine pulsating beneath the surface was a purveyor of jaw-dropping visuals, and we were suitably impressed by the way developer Raven wielded this power. Then again, two years ago was two years ago, and we've all moved on. Sadly, Elite Force hasn't, and yet Codemasters are still dangling the game like a mouldy carrot in front of PS2 gamers with nothing better to do. [Read More]

Telltale's The Walking Dead started life as a Left 4 Dead spin-off

This weekend marked the tenth anniversary of Telltale Games' celebrated The Walking Dead series, and to mark the occasion, publisher Skybound Games has released a new mini-documentary bringing with it various behind-the-scenes treats, including early prototype footage, and even the revelation that Telltales' genre-defining adventure was at one point planned to be a Left 4 Dead spin-off. 20 years later, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun is still a frightening prophecy

Looking back on the real-time strategy boom of the late 90s, it's unsurprising that modern audiences tend to celebrate Age of Empires, Starcraft and Warcraft. Beyond being great games, these titles also told stories that feel unproblematic. They are set in either the distant past, the distant future or in the distant recesses of our minds. The Command & Conquer series, however, played with a parallel version of the real world heavily influenced by post-Cold War international relations. [Read More]
