Zelda Breath of the Wild Xenoblade Chronicles quest: Largest bridge, skull's left eye and snowy mountain red shooting star locations explained

Zelda Breath of the Wild Xenoblade Chronicles quest is something new for the game - a new quest added by a free update used to promote another Nintendo adventure.

As soon as you boot up the game following the latest patch on either Wii U or Switch, a new sidequest named 'Xenoblade Chronicles 2' appears in your quest log. Completing this quest gives you three items to unlock the Salvager armour set.

Zelda Breath of the Wild Xenoblade Chronicles quest explained

The description will give you three cryptic clues hinting at locations to visit. Once you get there, look at the night sky in the direction mentioned to "find the red shooting stars".

If done correctly, you'll hear a specific noise and see a red trail of a shooting star along the sky. The star will land within view nearby. Head over and you'll find a chest with one of three pieces of armour.

It should be noted the same rules apply as regular shooting stars - it must be night time, during the ideal time of between 9:30pm and 3am. It's worth carrying wood with you to each destination, creating a campfire (use Flint or a Fire Arrow) and sit by the camp to fast forward time until night.

If the shooting star doesn't appear, then walk around a little at that location and move your camera around the sky, and it should appear soon enough.

It's also worth noting that a Blood Moon could impact your chances of seeing a star. We heard one star trigger but not actually appear as a Blood Moon approached, but then appear properly once the cutscene was over. If you do lose track of a shooting star, we assume you can come back another night and try again - but if all goes well the landing destination should easily by within reach.

Zelda red shooting star locations: Largest bridge, skull's left eye and snowy mountain positions

You can do the below in any order. It'll help if you have already explored the game's map and have nearby Shrines to warp to, as two in particular are spread out in far off areas.

The southern sky from the middle of the largest bridge.

This is located in Bridge of Hylia in Hylia Lake, south west of the Great Plateau. There is a hexagonal platform in the middle, and standing anywhere in there should trigger the star when looking south.

The star will drop just off to the south east of the bridge, at the water's edge. Open the chest that appears for the Salvager Headwear.

The eastern sky from the skull's left eye.

This refers to Skull Lake to the north east of Death Mountain. Though the game says the left eye, you should actually stand on the right, easterly one, on the tall column where the Zena Kai shrine is. (This is probably because that's left from the skull's 'perspective', if that makes sense.)

Once there, look to the east. You may need to waggle the camera around or shift your position around the Shrine, but it'll soon appear if the time of night is right.

The star will drop just off to the east. Glide over and run to it - there are a few nasties that spawn on the way but you can just ignore them. Open the chest to get the Salvager Vest.

The southeastern sky from the peak of the tall, pierced snowy mountain.

This is on top of Hebra Peak in the game's north west Hebra region. If you've already explored the region and activated its shrines, it's right above Goma Asaagh, though since it means you have to run all the way round, we'd recommend fast travelling to Shada Naw then approaching the mountain from the north, where it's a much easier climb.

You know you're in the right place as there's a rock with a Korok Seed. Now look towards Hyrule Castle and the shooting star will drop in that location.

Glide over, drop down and pop open the chest to get the Salvager Trousers.

Zelda Breath of the Wild Xenoblade Chronicles quest reward

Once you have all three, the Salvager set is yours. The description on each piece reads:

"Essential gear used by a boy who seeks sunken treasure in the Cloud sea. They're a rather rare find."

Each one gives you an increase to Swim Speed - not unlike the Zora Armor you pick up during the main story - with all three equipped at once providing the perk of Swim Dash Stamina Up.
