Destiny 2 The Invitation is the first mission of the Season of Opulence, following an 'Imperial Summons' from our favourite sweeper bot Benedict 99-40.
From there, you have to complete a series of quest steps. At a first glance these are simple, but some - such as the Imperial Treasure Map location and what Challenges are in the Glorious Harvest bounty - can feel surprisingly opaque.
What follows is how to complete every quest step, giving you a series of Power Surge rewards to get you closer to the new Destiny 2 level cap, start earning Imperials for the Menagerie and access to the new Raid.

Destiny 2 The Invitation quest steps in brief
Here's every step of The Invitation quest. Remember you need to be an Annual Pass holder for Destiny 2 Forsaken to get started.
Destiny 2 The Invitation quest in detail
First visit Benedict 99-40, who has now found a home in the Annex on the Tower. After that visit Ikora, who gives you a Power Surge Package - which contains a 690 power class item and energy weapon.
Next, you have to have to locate the barge on Nessus as past of 'The Invitation'. This is in Watcher's Grave, to the north. Fast travel here, and the barge location is right next to you.
Climb inside via the hatch underneath in the middle, and inside you'll find Werner 99-40, who will give you another Power Surge package, this time containing a 690 power Kinetic weapon, legs and arms, as well as the Cracked Chalice item.
For the Cracked Chalice step, you must 'Defeat Cabal on Nessus to collect lost Chalice fragments'. This is pretty simple - simply kill any Cabal, and the first ten should give you all the fragments you need. We did a Public Event in Artifact's Edge (Cabal Excavation) and completed it almost immediately as a result.
After this is the Mended Chalice step, where you have to 'Defeat Vex on Nessus with melee damage without dying'. Like the previous step, any Vex on Nessus will do. We did a Public Event in Exodus Black to get most of them done, then visited the Sunkern Cavern area to the east to finish them off.
Getting 25 melee kills doesn't have to be in a row, by the way - so feel free to change weapons - and as long as you don't die, you'll complete this step.
Then, you have to Recover Imperials, a currency of the Cabal Empire, within The Conflux Lost Sector on Nessus. The prior link will give you the exact location you need to find it.
Once done, you'll receive some Imperials and the chance to unlock a Rune slot from within your Pursuits (this is now on the Director menu). There is only one available - 'Unlock Gear Archetype Slot'.
How to complete the Glorious Harvest bounty and what Challenges are in Destiny 2
Next, it's time to complete the Glorious Harvest bounty from Werner 99-40. This is the Glorious Harvest weekly bounty you collected at the same time as the last quest step, and involves the following:
- Generate Orbs of Light (out of 100%)
- Earn experience (out of 100%)
- Complete any challenge
To clarify the last point, a Challenge in Destiny 2 is a Milestone - so this is anything that might give you Powerful Gear on the Director screen.
This could be this week's Flashpoint (which is Nessus, if you're playing in the expansion's launch week), the Heroic Story Mission, the latest Ascendant Challenge... anything that takes your fancy.
Remember to actually collect the Milestone reward to actually complete the 'challenge' and progress The Invitation quest.
Next, you have to find a chest at the end of the Imperial Treasure Map location.
There are many of these in the game, so our Imperial Treasure Map locations page can help you find exactly where it is. You're looking for the Well of Flames in particular, and though it will appear on your map as a cross, it's not as obvious as it looks.
Season of the Haunted is here! Get up to speed with our levelling guide. For The Witch Queen, learn how to get Exotics including Dead Messenger and Parasite. Late last year, we saw the Bungie 30th Anniversary, which adds the Grasp of Avarice dungeon, Strange Coins and new Exotics, including the Gjallarhorn and Forerunner.
How to finish The Invitation quest
Now head back to the barge in Watcher's Grave on Nessus to earn the last Power Surge Package for the remainder of the 690 gear.
To finish the Imperial quest line, equip all the gear (you need to be at least 690 to continue) then enter a Menagerie match. It's aboard the Leviathan, which is found on the bottom right of the Nessus map screen.
Once you have completed the Menagerie - it takes about 30 minutes, depending on the performance of your team - open the chest at the end.
Next, claim the Triumph you completed by taking down the boss at the end of the Menagerie (it's within Destinations, then Minor, then Menagerie and it's named Flair for Drama), then upgrade the Chalice.
The cheapest upgrade is 1000 Imperials; we earned two Triumphs from one Menagerie run, which gave us enough Imperials to unlock it.
After that, return to the Imperial Barge on Nessus and open a chest. If you head to the back of the barge, you'll see it's littered with chests that require 5,000 glimmer to open. Select any and open one - giving you some Imperials, a Rune, and the end of the questline.
Nicely done! With that complete, the mysteries of the Menagerie - and the new Raid, Crown of Sorrows - await...
